Blackness and beauty

As an American born to Nigerian parents, I was raised primarily in the United States, the United Kingdom and Côte d’Ivoire. The women in my family – my mother, grandmother and aunts – are formidable characters but, throughout my childhood, stories about their physical beauty preceded them. In the various circles of family, friends and community, I grew up constantly hearing how beautiful these women were who surrounded me.
