“No ads, please” – A green nudge for reducing paper waste

Consumers receive large amounts of unaddressed mail. Colorful ads are often thrown away without even being looked at, and plenty of resources are wasted this way. The production of advertising brochures does not only require wood as an input, but it is also energy- and water-intensive. Avoiding junk mail shows great potential in reducing consumers’ environmental impact. About 30 kilograms of unaddressed ads land in the postbox of a typical German household every year. An effective and well-known means of avoiding these ads is to attach a “no junk mail” sticker to one’s mailbox. One study in Barcelona has found that roughly 43% of unaddressed mail can be prevented this way.
